Fault geometry of M6-class normal-faulting earthquakes in the outer trench slope of Japan Trench from ocean bottom seismograph observations

چکیده

Abstract Since the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake, intra-plate normal-faulting earthquakes, including several M7-class have occurred in outer trench slope area from to rise along Japan Trench. Concerns regarding large earthquakes and associated tsunamis also arisen. Based on aftershock distributions, (hereinafter referred as outer-rise earthquakes) are likely related rupture of multiple faults. However, few observations clearly shown how faults act during earthquakes. During ocean bottom seismograph (OBS) central Trench September 2017 July 2018, three M6-class (Mw 6.2 20, October 06, 6.0 November 12) around OBS network. The near-field provided detailed information hypocenter locations focal mechanisms mainshocks aftershocks, immediately after mainshocks. We investigated fault configurations based observations. mainshock ruptured high-angle normal with a dip angle 65°. Off-fault activities that were not directly could be explained by stress changes caused confirmed. distributions main aftershocks suggest various dipping directions, angles, strike orientations. complicated geometry should considered possible model for tsunamis.

Aftershocks of the December 7, 2012 intraplate doublet near the Japan Trench axis

On December 7, 2012, a pair of large Mw 7.2 intraplate earthquakes occurred near the Japan Trench axis off Miyagi, northeast Japan. This doublet consisted of a deep reverse-faulting event followed by a shallow normal-faulting event. Aftershock observations using conventional and newly developed ultra-deep ocean bottom seismographs in the trench axis area showed that the shallow normal-faulting ...

What controls the lateral variation of large earthquake occurrence along the Japan Trench?

The lateral (along trench axis) variation in the mode of large earthquake occurrence near the northern Japan Trench is explained by the variation in surface roughness of the subducting plate. The surface roughness of the ocean bottom near the trench is well correlated with the large-earthquake occurrence. The region where the ocean bottom is smooth is correlated with 'typical' large underthrust...

Distribution of low-frequency earthquakes accompanying the very low frequency earthquakes along the Ryukyu Trench

This study investigated the activity and distribution of low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) accompanying the very low frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) in the central and southern Ryukyu Trench. This investigation was based on shortperiod seismometer waveforms obtained by the Japan Meteorological Agency from April 2004 to December 2015. The LFEs were detected using the Envelope Correlation Method, an...
